美國地質勘探局表示，印度尼西亞西部海岸發生里氏7.9級強烈地震。印尼官員向南蘇門答臘、北蘇門答臘和亞齊發出海嘯預警。印尼媒體報道指地震強度達8.3級。美國地質勘探局測量所得，地震發生於印尼當地時間19：49（格林尼治標凖時間12：49）。震中在印尼城市巴東西南808公里，震源深十公里。澳大利亞則向太平洋的科科斯島和聖誕島發出海嘯預警。
