意大利南部島嶼蘭佩杜薩的市長說，一艘載有非洲移民的船隻在蘭佩杜薩島附近沉沒，至少82人死亡。
官員說，140多人獲救，但是仍然有數百人失蹤。
報道說，船隻下沉時船上許多人跳海，意大利官員說數十人仍然在水中。
本周早些時候，13名移民在試圖到達西西里時落海身亡。
有報道說，在船隻沉沒前船上起火。據信當時有500人在船上。
當地媒體報道說，至少一名兒童和一名懷孕婦女身亡。
BBC在羅馬報道的記者阿蘭·約翰斯通說，每年這個季節是地中海都相當平靜的時候，每天都有船隻載著非洲和中東地區的移民到達意大利南部海岸。
他說這些船隻往往超載，船上十分擁擠，而且也不適合在海里航行。多年來許多這樣的船隻沉沒，造成大量死亡。
聯合國透露，2012年幾乎有500人在試圖偷渡歐洲的途中死亡或失蹤。
