【大紀元10月1日報導】（中央社威靈頓1日法新電）紐西蘭當局今天表示，8隻瀕臨絕種的鷸鴕在威靈頓動物園接受治療時，因呼吸感染而死亡，這是保育努力的「悲劇」。

紐西蘭保育部（DOC）表示，牠們是紐西蘭最稀有的鷸鴕品種。保育部生物多樣性主任麥克佛森（Jo Macpherson）說：「動物園與保育部人員對鷸鴕的死亡感到相當難過。」
自歐洲殖民以來，鷸鴕的數目因鼬、老鼠及雪貂等掠奪者出現而大幅減少，專家估計鷸鴕的數量目前僅剩7萬隻。
這8隻鷸鴕所屬品種嚴重瀕臨絕種，雖然因加強保育計畫，數目從1990年代中期的150隻，增加至現在僅存400隻。（譯者：中央社蔡佳伶）
