埃及軍方發佈48小時最後通牒，要求政府和抗議者達成協議，否則將被迫實行軍管。
埃及軍方表示，如果代表伊斯蘭黨派的總統穆爾西無法在規定時限內與抗議者達成協議，那麼軍隊將出面控制局勢，並推出通往「和平」的路線圖。
稍早，抗議人群襲擊並佔領了穆斯林兄弟會在開羅的總部大樓。
埃及國家電視台播出了軍隊領袖事先錄製好的一份聲明，形容民眾抗議行為是「史無前例」的民意表現。
不過，埃及軍隊最高指揮官阿卜杜勒·法塔赫·塞西將軍同時表示，軍隊不會干政。
