美國最高法院決定廢除一項把婚姻定義為一男一女之間結合的法律。
大法官投票以5-4的結果裁定，聯邦《婚姻保護法》（Defense of Marriage Act）未能向同性婚姻伴侶提供平等的保護。
這項重大裁決意味著合法結婚的同性伴侶可以享受與異性婚姻伴侶同等的聯邦福利等權益。
美國12個州和哥倫比亞特區承認同性婚姻，20多個州禁止同性婚姻。
