美國總統奧巴馬許諾要徹底調查有關敘利亞領導人阿薩德的軍隊使用化學武器的報道。
在與約旦國王阿卜杜拉會談中，奧巴馬重申如果有證據證明敘利亞政府軍使用了化學武器，將徹底改變美國對敘利亞的政策。
但是他強調，情報部門的評估目前仍是初步的。
早些時候，奧巴馬政府在致國會的一封信中說，美國情報官員做出評估，在一定程度上認為敘利亞政府軍曾小規模使用過沙林毒氣
但是，這封信說，單憑情報評估並不能改變美國在敘利亞問題上的立場，這需要聯合國進行全面調查，以確認真相。
