緬甸當局將釋放大約70名政治犯。在這之前，緬甸總統吳登盛許諾年底前釋放所有良心犯。
其中一些將被釋放的人來自緬甸克欽邦少數民族。克欽族最近與政府簽署協議，結束了數十年的衝突。
過去數年來，緬甸推出一系列政治改革措施，其中包括釋放了數百名政治犯。
據認為，緬甸監獄中還關押著大約100名政治犯。
