緬甸反對黨領導人昂山素季周三（3月13日）敦促繼續推進在緬甸西北部有爭議的中資銅礦項目。
昂山素季當天前往主要的蒙育瓦銅礦，探望當地村民。她表示，儘管有對該項目帶來的徵地和環境的擔憂，但不應該停止這一項目，否則會對經濟和民生產生負面影響。
她對村民說：「如果我們停止這一項目，對當地人民和國家都無益。其它國家（中國）就會認為我們的國家在經濟上不可靠。」
她說，無論喜歡與否，「我們必須與鄰國相處」。
蒙育瓦銅礦是緬甸最大的銅礦項目，由緬甸軍方的緬甸經濟控股公司和中國萬寶礦業公司經營。
很多人擔心合資銅礦對當地帶來環境、社會和健康問題。緬甸民眾去年11月舉行大規模遊行，要求合資公司停止採礦，遭到當局的鎮壓。
緬甸政府隨後成立調查委員會，對抗議示威事件進行調查，由昂山素季負責。
星期二（3月12日），緬甸議會發表的這份調查報告證實，緬甸警方在鎮壓去年中緬合資銅礦的示威中使用了白磷彈對付包括許多佛教僧侶在內示威者。
報告還說，由於缺乏透明，讓價值10億美元的銅礦擴建項目引起爭議。不過，報告建議「不應該終止這一項目」。
